The Code of Ethics of subhodayam represents our core commitments to our readers, our sources, our subjects, and the broader public interest. Every member of our editorial team — from reporters and photographers to editors and contributors — is required to understand, agree to, and uphold this Code as a condition of employment and contribution.
Truth and Accuracy
We hold truth as our highest professional obligation. We gather news through legitimate means only. We do not fabricate, alter, or misrepresent facts. We do not plagiarise the work of others. We acknowledge and correct errors promptly. When the full truth is not known, we say so clearly rather than filling gaps with speculation or assumption.
Independence
We guard our independence fiercely. We serve no party, government, advertiser, or special interest. We do not accept gifts, payments, or benefits from sources, subjects, or anyone else who might seek to influence our journalism. We disclose all potential conflicts of interest and recuse ourselves from coverage where our independence may be compromised.
Minimise Harm
We recognise that journalism can cause harm and we work to minimise it. We treat all people with respect and dignity, including those who are subjects of negative coverage. We are especially careful when dealing with vulnerable individuals including children, victims of crime and trauma, persons accused of crimes who have not been convicted, and members of marginalised communities. We do not publish the identities of sexual assault victims without their consent. We exercise great care in reporting on suicide, following established guidelines to avoid contagion.
Accountability
We are accountable to our readers and to the public. We monitor our own work for accuracy and fairness. We welcome criticism and respond to complaints seriously and transparently. We do not use our platform to pursue personal vendettas or private agendas. The Editor-in-Chief and senior leadership are subject to the same ethical standards as all other editorial staff.
Privacy
We respect the privacy of individuals while recognising that the right to privacy must sometimes be balanced against the public’s right to know. Private individuals have stronger privacy rights than public figures who have voluntarily entered public life. We do not publish private information about individuals unless it is clearly in the public interest and we have exhausted all other ways of reporting the story.
